#weRculture - Fête de la Musique 2020 - Introduction by Rainer Kern

"June 21st, the first day of summer, is known as Fete de la Musique almost all around the world. Each year saw thousands of events organized on this occasion, during which the audience and artists would meet at cultural institutions, clubs, but also in the public sphere. The music could be heard everywhere and was accessible to everyone.
However, this year’s Fete de la Musique will be completely different. The restrictions introduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic do not allow for joint celebrations in our cities. The artists are also put in a different situation. Traditionally, during the Music Day, artists played free concerts for the public, which they cannot allow for this year.
The difficult situation of the music industry is already a fact, so on this special day we make sure that all the performers are rewarded and the additional profits from the event are transferred to the battle against the virus that prevents us from meeting.
The event is to be an act of solidarity of artists with the audience staying at homes, but also of cities and audiences with artists who have not only lost their main source of income but, above all, do not have the opportunity to share their music and interact with their listeners, which is undoubtedly a driving force for further creation for many of them.
On this special day, the UCCN Cities of Music have prepared a real musical feast. Starting 12.00 CEST, a special broadcast will start on the UNESCO Cities of Music Facebook fan page and the Music Export Poland YouTube channel. The viewers will have the opportunity to see a program created jointly by 24 cities from five different continents. Each city acts as a curator within the framework of the project, making sure that artists/animators and bands that best reflect the specificity of their cities appear on stage in their dedicated time slots. At the same time, the project is a component of the WeRculture global campaign through which we want to stress the importance of values such as respect and responsibility
in times of global crisis.
During the event, a fund raiser will be held for the “COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund” created by the
World Health Organization." Filipe Faria
