Idanha-a-Nova and Music
Territory
Idanha-a-Nova is located in the center of Portugal surrounded by the municipalities of Penamacor, Castelo Branco, Fundão and the Spanish region. It is located 286 km from Lisbon.
It is home to one of the largest municipalities of Portugal, with 1412.73 km ² and 9,716 inhabitants (2011), divided into 17 parishes.
The territory with its geological richness, includes the Geopark Naturtejo and the Tagus International Natural Park. This is one of the most important parks in Europe, where they coexist harmoniously hundreds of animal and plant species.
The traditional economic activities are still an integral part of the forestry, with the quartzite ridges of Penha Garcia, the granitic inselberg of Monsanto and the plainness of Idanha-a-Nova. The Tourist landscapes of the area are the Historical Village of Monsanto and Idanha-a-Velha as well as the villages of Penha Garcia and Proenca-a-Velha.
The historical heritage of Idanha-a-Nova is very diverse, consisting of its castles, of which 8 Templars, the parish churches of the 17 parishes, misericords, chapels and monuments. Important are also the sacred art heritage, the traces of agricultural archeology as well as all the testimonies still present and vivid through oral traditions.
