Cultural events and gastronomy
The council plays a key role in the organization, development and promotion of cultural activities. These have a great diversity and unfold in different historical sites in the municipality - Monsanto, Idanha-a-Velha and Proenca-a-Velha. The Cultural program includes dance, music events, different styles of theater, exhibitions, fairs and festivals associated with local traditions and gastronomy.
Apart from the programming of all kinds of cultural events the city pays special attention to three regular events: the “Feira Raiana de Desenvolvimento e Cooperação Transfronteiriça” (Local Fair Raiana for Local Development and transboundary cooperation), the Animation program of Historic Villages; the Boom Festival of music, dance and other artistic activities.
Concerning the Gastronomy of the region there are a series of proposals such as the dishes of freshwater fish such as “achigã frito” (bass fried) fish with tomato rice or a creamed fish and meat soup, lamb stew, wild boar or deer, Partridge marinated or rice hare. The gastronomic festivals are held throughout the year in various parishes of the municipality.
